State Rests Case in Hernando County Murder Trial of Jeffrey Crum

Hernando County, Fla. – On Wednesday, the State of Florida rested its case in the murder trial of Jeffrey Crum, accused of killing 15‑year‑old Jennifer Odom in 1993. The proceedings, held at the Hernando County Courthouse, featured more than two dozen witnesses over two days.

Key Testimony from Crum’s Son

Jeffrey Crum Jr. took the stand to recount conversations he had with his father years ago. He said that while they were drinking, his father confessed to involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Jennifer Odom. Crum Jr. recalled his father telling him that one day he would realize he was a “monster.” He also described a childhood gift – a musical instrument – that prosecutors say is linked to the victim’s clarinet case.

During his testimony, the prosecution presented the actual clarinet case and the clarinet recovered from the wooded area where Odom’s body was found. When shown the items, Crum Jr. responded, “yes,” indicating they were familiar to him. He added that the instrument his father gave him eventually disappeared.

Additional Witnesses

The State called an acquaintance who once lived on Crum’s property. That witness testified that Crum had allegedly spoken about the murder while they shared the same land years earlier. The prosecution used this testimony to reinforce the narrative that Crum had made incriminating statements in private settings.

Background of the Case

Jennifer Odom vanished in February 1993 after disembarking from a school bus in Pasco County. A witness saw her walk toward a blue truck. Her body was later discovered in a wooded area of Hernando County. Two years after the discovery, investigators recovered her backpack and clarinet case in a separate rural location.

Advanced DNA analysis eventually linked Crum to a 1992 kidnapping and sexual assault of a 17‑year‑old girl at a Pasco County bus stop. He was convicted of those crimes in 2019 and sentenced to two life terms. In 2023, prosecutors added charges for the kidnapping, sexual battery, and murder of Jennifer Odom.

Defense Response

During cross‑examination, Crum Jr. acknowledged that his father had spoken about the case while they were drinking, but he maintained that his father never provided specific details. When asked whether he ever reported his father’s statements to law enforcement, Crum Jr. answered, “No ma’am.” The defense chose not to call any witnesses and rested its case on Wednesday.

Next Steps

Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Thursday at 8:30 a.m. The jury will then deliberate on the evidence presented over the past week.

The information in this report comes from witness testimony and statements made during the trial in Hernando County.
