Bowled Over by Charm: McKinney Street Pottery and the Art of a Perfect Sherman Afternoon

There is a moment — and if you have ever stood at the edge of a big Texas lake on a clear morning, you know exactly the one I mean — when the water goes from grey-green to a blazing copper-blue, the herons lift off the cattails, and you think: this is exactly where I am supposed to be right now. For me, that moment happens at the swim beach and marina at Eisenhower State Park, the sprawling, gloriously underrated reservoir playground that sits just a few minutes north of Sherman on the Grayson County side of Lake Texoma.

Lake Texoma itself needs little introduction to anyone who grew up in North Texas — at roughly 89,000 acres it is one of the largest reservoirs in the entire country, straddling the Texas-Oklahoma border like a friendly giant. What surprises most first-time visitors from Sherman is how quickly you can get to genuinely beautiful, uncrowded shoreline. The drive up US-75 to the Eisenhower State Park entrance takes about twenty minutes from downtown Sherman, and the moment you pass through the park gate the city noise simply stops.

The swim beach is the obvious first stop, especially from May through September. A wide, sandy crescent curves along a protected cove where the water stays shallow enough for families but deep enough to actually swim. Lifeguards are on duty during designated summer hours, and the gentle slope into the lake makes it ideal for kids who are still working up their confidence. Bring a cooler, stake out a picnic table under one of the big live oaks, and plan to stay longer than you think you will. The water temperature in early summer hovers in that perfect range — cool enough to be refreshing, warm enough that you never dread getting back in.

Beyond swimming, the park’s marina is the launching point for everything that makes Lake Texoma legendary among anglers. Striped bass — locally called stripers — run in these waters year-round, and the marina staff can point you toward bait shops and guide services if you want a proper fishing excursion without having to do much advance research. Kayak and paddleboat rentals are also available seasonally, and the calm waters of the cove are about as forgiving a place as you will find to try paddling for the first time.

Hikers will appreciate the network of trails that wind through cedar and post oak along the bluffs above the lake. The views from the higher ground are legitimately dramatic — you get those wide, sky-heavy Texoma panoramas that remind you just how big and open this part of the state truly is. Bring decent shoes; some of the trail surfaces get rocky close to the water’s edge.

Camping is available throughout the park in both RV and tent configurations, and the sites that back up to the lake are genuinely lovely. But even if you are only driving up from Sherman for the day, the entry fee is modest and the return on investment — in terms of fresh air, sunshine, and the particular peace that only a big lake can deliver — is considerable.

What makes this destination especially appealing as a Sherman day trip is how little effort it requires. Pack a lunch, grab your sunscreen, and point the car north. By mid-morning you can be floating in that copper-blue water, watching the herons work the shallows, and wondering why you waited this long to make the drive.
