The Frick Pittsburgh unveils its 2027 exhibition lineup

The Frick Pittsburgh, the city’s premier art museum, released its 2027 season this week, highlighting three distinct exhibitions that blend local artistic heritage with broader cultural narratives.

Soul, Sound & Voice: Watercolors by Jerry Pinkney (Feb. 6–May 9, 2027)

The first show honors the late Jerry Pinkney, a Pennsylvania‑born illustrator celebrated for his vibrant watercolor work in more than 100 children’s books. Pinkney’s career spanned five decades, producing award‑winning titles such as The Lion & the Mouse and The Little Mermaid. In addition to book illustration, he created album covers, posters, and magazine art featuring figures like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Ma Rainey and Pittsburgh jazz legend Roy Eldridge. The exhibition will display nearly one hundred watercolors alongside rarely seen black‑and‑white sketches, offering visitors a comprehensive view of his artistic range.

Abstract Expressionists: The Women (June 12–Sept. 26, 2027)

The second exhibition challenges the traditional male‑centric narrative of Abstract Expressionism. It brings together roughly 40 paintings by more than 30 women artists active between 1936 and 1977, including Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Howardena Pindell and Alma Thomas. While figures such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning have long been hailed as the movement’s icons, this show emphasizes the innovative risk‑taking and monumental contributions of the women whose work has often been overlooked. Curators aim to provide a more inclusive account of the era’s artistic breakthroughs.

Paradox of Pearls: Renaissance to the Gilded Age (Nov. 6, 2027–Feb. 27, 2028)

The third program, a multimedia presentation titled “Paradox of Pearls,” invites visitors to explore the complex legacy of the pearl from the 16th century through the Gilded Age. Beyond its reputation as a luxury adornment, the pearl was a highly sought‑after commodity tied to early colonial trade, slavery and violence. The exhibit, organized in partnership with Duquesne University professor Laura Engel, uses artifacts, interactive displays and scholarly research to reveal how pearls have both empowered and oppressed throughout history.

Tickets for all three exhibitions will go on sale in November. For additional details and to purchase tickets, readers can visit the museum’s website at thefrickpittsburgh.org.
