State police helicopter and small plane collide near Carlisle Airport

A mid‑air collision involving a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter and a small Cessna 150 airplane occurred Wednesday evening near the Carlisle Airport, located about 20 miles west of Harrisburg. The Bell 407 helicopter was on an approach from the east when it struck the Cessna, which was circling the field.

Video from local CNN affiliate WPMT showed the wreckage of the helicopter, bearing the state police emblem, lying on its side near the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that two state police officers were aboard the helicopter, though the number of occupants in the Cessna has not been released.

Governor Josh Shapiro posted to social media that he had been briefed on the crash and was heading to the scene. “Lori and I are praying hard and we ask all of our fellow Pennsylvanians to join us,” the governor wrote.

Investigation and safety context

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will conduct a joint investigation into the accident. Officials note that Carlisle Airport does not have an operating control tower; pilots rely on a common radio frequency to announce their intentions, a standard practice at many small, non‑towered fields.

This incident adds to growing scrutiny of shared airspace between helicopters and fixed‑wing aircraft. Last year, a collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport between a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet resulted in 67 fatalities, prompting calls for stricter coordination in congested air corridors.

Community response

Local residents and first‑responders gathered at the crash site shortly after the collision. While the condition of any passengers in the Cessna remains unknown, emergency crews worked quickly to secure the area and begin recovery efforts.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by pilots operating at smaller airports without tower services, where clear communication is essential to prevent accidents. Aviation experts often stress the importance of vigilant radio etiquette and situational awareness, especially when multiple aircraft are operating in close proximity.

What’s next?

Investigators will examine flight‑tracking data, cockpit voice recordings, and any available radar information to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision. The FAA may also review existing procedures for non‑towered airports to assess whether additional safety measures are warranted.

State officials have not yet released details about the identities of the officers aboard the helicopter or the occupants of the Cessna. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.

For families of the crew members and the broader community, the focus remains on prayer, support, and awaiting official findings that could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
