Marshallese community featured at Crystal Bridges panel hosted by local student

Northwest Arkansas, home to one of the nation’s largest Marshallese populations, will host a community‑focused panel on Thursday evening at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. The event, scheduled for 6 p.m., aims to share the history, cultural traditions, and current concerns of the Marshallese community with a broad audience.

Student‑led moderation brings fresh perspective

The discussion will be moderated by Leyla Tore, a senior at Haas Hall Academy in Bentonville. Tore said she was inspired to organize the event after witnessing a Marshallese couple struggle to communicate with staff in an urgent‑care waiting room. Determined to learn more and give space for authentic voices, she reached out to local healthcare providers, educators and community advocates to assemble the panel.

“Real leadership is often about building space for other people’s voices, not filling that space with your own voice,” Tore explained. “I didn’t set out to be a spokesperson for the Marshallese community. I set out just to listen and I was curious. That became the model for this event.”

Panelists represent health, education and advocacy

The lineup includes professionals from three key sectors:

  • Healthcare: A nurse practitioner who works with Marshallese patients and can speak to language‑access challenges and culturally appropriate care.
  • Education: A teacher from the local school district who has developed curriculum components that reflect Marshallese heritage.
  • Community advocacy: A leader from a nonprofit that assists Marshallese families with immigration paperwork, employment resources and civic engagement.

Each panelist will share personal experiences, discuss how the community navigates everyday obstacles, and suggest ways the broader public can support inclusion and understanding.

Why the event matters to Bentonville and the region

Arkansas’ Marshallese population has grown significantly over the past two decades, drawn by employment opportunities in the poultry and manufacturing sectors. Despite their contributions, many families face language barriers, limited access to culturally competent services, and a need for greater representation in local decision‑making.

By providing a public forum, the Crystal Bridges event seeks to bridge gaps between the Marshallese community and longtime residents, encouraging dialogue that can lead to concrete actions—such as expanded translation services in health clinics, school programs that celebrate Marshallese culture, and partnerships with local businesses.

How to attend

The panel is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Marshallese experience in Northwest Arkansas. No registration is required; attendees may simply arrive at the museum’s outdoor pavilion at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Light refreshments will be provided, and the museum’s staff will be on hand to answer additional questions after the discussion.

For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be made available on the museum’s website later that evening.

Community response

Local leaders have praised the initiative. Bentonville Mayor Stephanie Haines noted, “Events like this enrich our community fabric and demonstrate the inclusive spirit that makes Northwest Arkansas a great place to live.” Parents of Marshallese children expressed hope that the conversation will lead to more resources for their families.

Overall, the Crystal Bridges panel represents a collaborative effort to honor a vibrant cultural group while addressing practical concerns that affect daily life for many residents.
