Loudoun County Sheriff urges parents to limit details in back‑to‑school photos

With the new school year under way, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is reminding parents in the county to think twice before posting back‑to‑school photos on social media. Sheriff Mike Chapman explained that pictures that reveal personal details—such as a child’s school name, grade level, classroom, bus stop or daily schedule—can unintentionally give a stranger enough information to locate a family’s home.

Real‑world example drives the warning

Chapman cited a case the office investigated several years ago. In that incident, an individual found a child’s photo online, used clues from the image to determine the family’s address, and then showed up at the home uninvited. “We don’t want anybody to be exploited. We don’t want too much information out there that can actually create a problem for the kids,” Chapman told FOX 5.

Practical advice for parents

The sheriff’s recommendation is simple: the less information shared publicly, the safer the child. If a parent feels a photo must include identifying details, Chapman suggested sending the image directly to trusted family members or friends via text or a private messaging app rather than posting it on a public platform.

Local reaction

Frank Bello, a Sterling resident, said he had posted back‑to‑school pictures of his children in the past. “It’s alarming,” he said of the LCSO warning. “It’s definitely something we should be more careful about.” His daughter, Jayda, added, “I’ve definitely seen my parents post about us, and I didn’t realize that it was such a big issue.”

Why the guidance matters

Law‑enforcement agencies across the country have noted a rise in online stalking and “swatting” incidents that begin with seemingly innocuous social‑media posts. By limiting the amount of location‑specific data shared online, families can reduce the risk of becoming targets of unwanted attention.

What parents can do today

  • Review any back‑to‑school photo before posting and remove or blur school signs, classroom numbers, bus routes, or other identifying markers.
  • Share images through private channels rather than public feeds.
  • Educate children about the potential risks of oversharing online.
  • Report any suspicious activity to LCSO if a stranger appears to be gathering information from social media.

The LCSO plans to continue outreach through community meetings and school events to reinforce safe‑online practices throughout the year.
