Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre unveils new costumes for 2027 Nutcracker production

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT) has released the first look at the costumes for its upcoming, all‑new production of “The Nutcracker,” scheduled to open in December 2027. The theater’s artistic director, Adam W. McKinney, highlighted the work of Susan Roemer, a former professional dancer and Isadora Duncan Award winner, who is handling both costume and scenic design.

Designs rooted in history

Roemer’s renderings reflect the original story’s 1906 setting as well as the 1956 era in which the Pittsburgh‑based version of the ballet was first staged. The designs feature more than 74 distinct character costumes, with a total of 192 costumes appearing on stage each night. In addition, the production will include over 150 hats, headpieces and accessories, emphasizing the visual richness of the holiday classic.

Local talent and tradition

The new Nutcracker will replace PBT’s current production of Terrence S. Orr’s version, which has enjoyed a 24‑year run. By commissioning a fresh adaptation, the company aims to give Pittsburgh audiences a once‑in‑a‑generation experience while preserving the beloved holiday tradition. Roemer’s background in dance and visual design brings a unique perspective that blends artistic integrity with community pride.

Community impact

Beyond the artistic merits, the production promises economic benefits for local vendors, costume makers and stagecraft professionals. The extensive wardrobe and accessory list will require a sizable workforce of seamstresses, fabric suppliers and artisans, reinforcing Pittsburgh’s reputation as a hub for skilled craftsmanship.

Statements from leadership

“I am delighted to share Susan’s beautiful and creative costume sketches for our all‑new production of The Nutcracker,” McKinney said. “Each design brings personality and story to each character and adds to the magic of our exciting new version of The Nutcracker.”

Looking ahead

Tickets for the 2027 Nutcracker are expected to go on sale later this year, with a schedule of performances that will span the holiday season. The theater encourages families, school groups and longtime patrons to plan ahead, noting that the new production aims to be both a visual feast and a celebration of Pittsburgh’s cultural heritage.
