Fort Worth approves beer and wine sales for proposed Trader Joe’s site

Fort Worth city officials finished an alcohol distance review on Tuesday for a proposed grocery store at 9000 North City Drive in the Alliance area. The review, filed with the city, permits the future retailer to sell beer and wine on the premises.

Location and compliance

The filing lists the site as block 5, lot 1 of the eastern portion of the North City development, near the I‑35W and U.S. Highway 287 interchange. According to the city’s distance‑review checklist, the location is more than 300 feet from any church, public or private school, and public hospital, satisfying the ordinance that protects those institutions from nearby alcohol sales.

While the site is within 1,000 feet of a private school and another liquor or package store, the city’s regulations allow the permit to proceed. An inspector checked the appropriate box on the form, indicating the city is ready to issue an alcohol sales permit for the future store.

Trader Joe’s response

Trader Joe’s has not confirmed that it will build at the North City Drive address, though the company continues to expand throughout North Texas. A spokesperson, Nakia Rohde, told the Fort Worth Report that the retailer does not yet have an opening date to share. Rohde added that new stores are typically announced three to six months before they open to shoppers.

Other upcoming stores in the region

In addition to the Alliance‑area filing, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows a 12,476‑square‑foot Trader Joe’s slated for 2710 E. FM 544, Suite 100, in Wylie, Collin County. Construction on that project is expected to begin next spring with completion targeted for June 2027.

A second location, 12,505 square feet, is planned for Mansfield at 3020 Matlock Road. That store, identified as Trader Joe’s No. 412, is scheduled to start construction in December and finish in March.

Trader Joe’s already operates two stores in Tarrant County: one at 2701 S. Hulen St. in Fort Worth and another at 1492 E. Southlake Blvd. in Southlake.

What this means for residents

The approval clears a regulatory hurdle for a new grocery option that could bring additional jobs and convenient shopping to north Fort Worth. Residents will also have the ability to purchase beer and wine at the future store, expanding local retail choices without having to travel to other parts of the city.

City officials noted that the review process is routine and follows the same standards applied to other alcohol‑related permits. The decision reflects Fort Worth’s ongoing efforts to balance economic development with community safeguards.
