A photography exhibit called ‘The Other Side of Breast Cancer’ is opening at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati, featuring breast cancer survivors from the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Dragon Boat Team. The exhibit showcases the women’s resilience and strength, focusing on their backs and the scars that tell their stories.
Empowering Survivors
The exhibit is the brainchild of Priscilla Elgersma, co-founder and coach of the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Dragon Boat Team. Elgersma wanted to highlight the often-overlooked aspect of breast cancer – the strength and resilience of the survivors. The team, which consists of breast cancer survivors, competes in dragon boat races and has found a sense of community and empowerment through the sport.
One of the survivors featured in the exhibit, Colleen Murray, shared her story of battling metastatic breast cancer for over 15 years. Murray found solace in the dragon boat team and the photography exhibit, which she says has helped her come to terms with her diagnosis and find a sense of purpose.
Supporting Local Art and Awareness
The exhibit is not only a celebration of breast cancer survivors but also a way to raise awareness about the disease. The Pendleton Art Center is hosting the exhibit, which will run from 5-9 pm on Friday, June 26. The event is free and open to the public, and attendees can expect to see powerful photographs and hear inspiring stories from the survivors.
