Louisville libraries are promoting summer reading programs to help children avoid losing academic progress during the summer. Reading for just 15 minutes a day can help combat the “summer slide,” when students lose some of the gains they made during the school year.
Summer Reading Programs
Dozens of events and activities are taking place at branches across Louisville, including the Greatest Day of Play, which kicks off this weekend. The library system’s youth services manager, Kate Schiavi, said summer reading is an important way to keep young minds engaged. “It’s really important for kids to stay engaged and learning all summer, and so we like to make it fun,” Schiavi said. “We let kids read whatever they want. There’s no required reading list. Kids read books, they win prizes, and they come in and enjoy the library.”
