Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced a new program to improve water quality in central Iowa by providing cover crop incentives to farmers in 22 eligible counties.
Des Moines Watershed Program
The program is part of a $319 million water quality investment, which includes funding for water quality monitoring, conservation practices, and water treatment infrastructure improvements.
Farmers in Audubon, Boone, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Clay, Dallas, Dickinson, Emmet, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Polk, Sac, Webster, Winnebago, and Wright counties can enroll in the program to receive cover crop cost assistance up to $25 per acre for up to 500 acres.
According to Naig, cover crops are an effective tool for keeping soil and nutrients in the field, improving soil health, and protecting water quality.
