West Nile Virus Found in Mosquitoes in Lower Merion, Montgomery County

Montgomery County health officials announced Tuesday that West Nile virus has been identified in mosquitoes collected from Lower Merion Township, a suburban community just outside Philadelphia. The positive test came from a sample gathered last Thursday, confirming the presence of the virus in the local mosquito population.

What residents need to know

The Department of Health advises all residents to take simple, proactive steps to protect themselves and their families. Mosquitoes that carry West Nile are most active from dusk until dawn, so limiting outdoor exposure during those hours can reduce the risk of bites.

Eliminating standing water around homes is the most effective preventive measure. Empty bird baths, clean gutters, and remove any containers that can hold water, such as old tires, flower pots, and buckets. Even small amounts of water can serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Symptoms and treatment

Most people infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms or only mild flu‑like illness, including fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In rare cases, the virus can cause severe neurological disease, such as meningitis or encephalitis, which requires immediate medical attention. If you develop a high fever, stiff neck, confusion, or muscle weakness, seek care promptly.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for West Nile virus; care is supportive, focusing on relieving symptoms and maintaining hydration. Early detection and medical monitoring are essential for those who develop serious complications.

Community response

The county’s vector control team is increasing surveillance efforts, setting additional traps, and conducting larvicide applications in high‑risk areas. Residents are encouraged to report any unusually large mosquito populations to the health department.

Local schools and community organizations are also being notified to spread awareness among families, especially those with children, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems, who are more vulnerable to severe illness.

How to stay informed

Updates on mosquito activity and West Nile virus cases will be posted on the Montgomery County Health Department’s website and social media channels. Residents can sign up for email alerts or follow the department’s official Facebook page for real‑time information.

By taking these precautionary steps, the community can help limit the spread of West Nile virus and protect public health throughout the summer months.
