SEPTA urges Philadelphia bus riders to verify routes ahead of major network changes

Philadelphia – SEPTA is asking bus riders to double‑check their routes as the agency launches the first phase of a comprehensive bus network overhaul this weekend. The changes, which include two brand‑new routes, six extensions and seven eliminations, will take effect on Sunday and Monday – the day before most Philadelphia schools reopen.

New signage and trip‑planning tools

“We are installing 13,000 new permanent signs throughout the system,” said Katie Monroe, SEPTA’s director of customer information. New signs are being placed at key locations such as 12th Street and Oregon Avenue. Monroe emphasized that riders should verify their routes before boarding, noting that “most of the routes that will change, of the 30 that will change, are changing on Sunday and some are changing on Monday.”

To help commuters, SEPTA has updated its online trip planner and mobile app with the revised network. The agency also encourages riders to review posted information at their regular stops.

Why the timing matters

The adjustments are being coordinated with the Philadelphia School District’s reopening schedule. “In alignment with the school district reopening, we make some adjustments to our bus network,” Monroe explained. For families and students who rely on public transit to get to school, the timing aims to provide a smoother start to the academic year.

What the first phase includes

The first phase of the overhaul comprises:

  • Two brand‑new bus routes
  • Six route extensions that expand service to growing neighborhoods
  • Seven route eliminations that remove under‑utilized trips

Monroe said this is the first time SEPTA has taken a comprehensive look at all its bus routes to ensure they match demand and operate as efficiently and reliably as possible.

Rider experiences

Long‑time rider Liz Kennedy of Southwest Philadelphia said checking schedules has become part of her routine. “If I’m in Center City, I’ll catch the 45 to Oregon Avenue to catch my G bus to get home,” she said. Kennedy added, “They call me the SEPTA queen; I’ve been catching SEPTA for years.”

Looking ahead

SEPTA indicated that this weekend’s changes are only the beginning. Phase two is slated for February 2027, with a third phase planned for June 2027, further refining the network based on rider feedback and usage data.

Commuters are urged to use the updated trip planner, review posted signage, and allow extra travel time while the new system settles in.
