A well-known Nintendo game collector, Jason Ganos, recently discovered an ultrarare collection of 97 “absolutely pristine” copies of Super Mario Brothers Duck Hunt in Wisconsin.
The Discovery
The cartridges were found in a box that had been sitting in storage for years at a pop culture store in Waukesha, outside Milwaukee. The store owner, Kevin Braun, had bought the box from a customer whose family had kept them for metal scraps but thought they were not worth much.
The cartridges of Super Mario Brothers Duck Hunt were made in 1993, long after the company discontinued the bundle in 1991. Ganos and Braun still aren’t sure why the copies they possess were made, but they assume they were either warranty replacements or part of a bundle with a box retailer that never panned out.
Auction and Charity
Most of the cartridges will go up for sale in an online auction that will run until September 9. Ganos and Braun are only auctioning off three of the perfect 10 scored cartridges. They are both keeping one copy with a score of a 10, and a few others rated in the higher 9’s.
Ganos hopes to keep the cartridges in pristine condition, as they can be played if the buyer wants. The discovery is a significant find for Nintendo collectors, and the auction is expected to attract a lot of interest.
