Trump rallies Texas, warns Democrats would harm the Lone Star State

President Trump made his third Texas trip in less than a month on Wednesday, holding a rally in San Antonio to energize supporters of Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton. The event, attended by Paxton and Republican House candidate Carlos De La Cruz, underscored the administration’s commitment to preserving Texas’s conservative values ahead of a closely watched midterm contest.

Trump’s warning to Texas voters

Speaking to a packed crowd, Trump warned that electing Democrat James Talarico would “destroy” the state. He framed Texas as a refuge from what he described as the “economic oppression and social collapse” of blue‑state policies in California, New York, Illinois and elsewhere. “If Talarico and the Democrats get their way, all of that squalor, misery and poverty, homelessness … that’s coming to destroy your beloved state of Texas,” the president said.

Trump also invoked Texas icons such as Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis, saying they would “be rolling over in their graves” at the sight of a Democratic senator. He dismissed the Democratic challenger with a nickname popular among conservatives, calling him “Talafreako.”

Rally atmosphere and Republican unity

Despite interruptions from protesters, Trump remained upbeat, joking that a heckler was “going home to his mother, who voted for me.” He praised Paxton, calling him a “pain in the ass” in a self‑deprecating way, but stressed that Republicans “need Ken so badly.” The president’s remarks highlighted the importance of a unified Republican front to retain the Senate majority.

Poll shows a tightening race

A New York Times/Siena Research Institute poll released Tuesday shows Democrat Talarico leading Paxton by six percentage points. While the numbers suggest a competitive race, the Trump administration emphasizes that the momentum can shift with continued grassroots mobilization and the financial resources being poured into the campaign.

Republicans are reportedly investing millions in the Texas Senate contest, reflecting the race’s significance for the national balance of power. The administration argues that a strong showing in Texas will help preserve the slim Republican Senate majority and protect the policy agenda championed by President Trump.

Broader midterm strategy

Trump’s Texas stop is part of a larger push to bolster Republican candidates in traditionally red states that have become battlegrounds. Recent trips have taken him to Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, Nebraska and Alaska, where he has campaigned alongside Vice President J.D. Vance.

In the 2024 presidential election, Trump carried all six of these states by double‑digit margins, underscoring his continued appeal in the heartland. The administration believes that leveraging that support will help secure key Senate seats and advance its agenda on issues such as energy policy, border security and economic growth.

Paxton’s campaign challenges

Paxton’s campaign recently faced a setback after a leaked audio tape revealed the Texas attorney general expressing frustration over the Iran war and high gas prices hurting his campaign. He also complained about perceived control from Washington and President Trump, suggesting internal tensions. The campaign dismissed the tape as “manipulated nonsense.”

Nevertheless, Trump’s presence in San Antonio aims to reaffirm the governor’s and the administration’s backing of Paxton, reinforcing the message that Republican unity remains strong despite any internal disputes.

What’s at stake for Texas

Texas has not elected a Democrat to any statewide office since 1994, and the state remains a cornerstone of the Republican coalition. The administration argues that maintaining Republican control is essential to preserving Texas’s low‑tax environment, energy independence and cultural heritage.

As the midterm season progresses, the Trump administration will continue to rally Texas voters, emphasizing the contrast between conservative governance and what it characterizes as the failed policies of the Democratic Party.
