Texas stores recall Halloween chocolate candy over undisclosed milk ingredient

Dallas, TX – Parents and candy lovers in Texas should check their Halloween treats. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for several sizes of Crystal Temptations’ “Chocolatey Eyeballs” candy after discovering that the product contains whey, a milk ingredient, which was not listed on the packaging.

What’s being recalled

The recall covers five product styles sold in 13 states, including Texas: Style No. 54040-CHEY (10‑ounce plastic bag), Style No. 54077-CHEY (7‑ounce acrylic box), Style No. 58008-CHEY (10.5‑ounce round plastic jar), Style No. 58089-CHEY (16‑ounce plastic pouch) and Style No. 54083-CHEY (11‑ounce plastic bag with tag). All items are labeled under the “Little Temptations” line with varieties such as “Spooks & Spells” and “Sweet Scary Treats.”

Why the recall matters

Milk is a major allergen. People who are allergic or severely sensitive to dairy could experience a serious or life‑threatening reaction if they consume the candy. The FDA’s notice states that, as of August 31, no illnesses have been reported, but the risk remains for anyone with a milk allergy.

How the issue was discovered

A TJX analyst flagged the problem after routine testing revealed the presence of whey. Crystal Temptations attributed the oversight to a temporary breakdown in its production and packaging processes, which failed to list the milk ingredient on the label.

What consumers should do

If you purchased any of the recalled items, the FDA advises you to destroy the candy immediately. Stores will not provide point‑of‑sale refunds. To obtain a refund, customers must contact Crystal Temptations directly, provide proof of purchase, and follow the company’s instructions. The company can be reached at 201‑246‑7990.

Where the candy was sold

The affected products were distributed through Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Sierra stores in Texas, as well as locations in Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Indiana, Nevada, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and Wyoming.

Protecting families this Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, families are urged to double‑check any candy they plan to hand out, especially for children with known dairy allergies. Comparing the style numbers and packaging photos from the FDA announcement with the items in your pantry can help ensure safety.

For more information, visit the FDA’s recall page or contact Crystal Temptations directly.
