MercyOne crisis‑response K‑9 Abby celebrates second birthday in West Des Moines

West Des Moines – MercyOne’s crisis‑response K‑9, Abby, marked her second birthday on Thursday with a small celebration at the department’s West Des Moines station. The black‑and‑tan Labrador‑mix has been serving the agency since late 2024, spending her first year in training before officially joining the team.

Abby’s role in crisis response

Abby’s duties go beyond the traditional police dog model. She is trained to help de‑escalate stressful encounters, provide comfort to individuals in crisis, and boost morale among first‑responders throughout Iowa. Her presence has been credited with calming tense moments in mental‑health calls, domestic disputes, and other high‑stress incidents.

Colleagues share memories

“She’s kind of like a firehouse dog around here,” said Jeff Spencer, Abby’s handler. “The vast majority of people love her to death. When they see her, they yell her name and fight for attention, so she has to pick favorites sometimes.”

Katelyn Bovinett, a MercyOne dispatcher, recalled a personal moment: “I was having a difficult moment, sitting on the floor trying to regroup, and Abby just came running in, sat in my lap, and I was instantly grounded.” The simple act of a trained dog offering a warm lap helped a stressed employee find calm in a chaotic shift.

Birthday celebration

During the celebration, Abby was showered with pets, cuddles, and a special “Birthday Girl” bandana. Colleagues took turns sharing stories of how the canine officer had made a difference in their workday, from easing the tension of a volatile call to simply brightening a routine shift.

MercyOne officials noted that Abby’s presence aligns with the agency’s broader commitment to compassionate, community‑focused care. By integrating a K‑9 unit into crisis response, the department aims to reduce the need for force, promote mental‑health awareness, and foster a sense of safety for both citizens and responders.

Looking ahead

Abby will continue her service as the agency expands its crisis‑response program statewide. The success of the K‑9 unit has sparked interest from neighboring counties looking to adopt similar models that prioritize humane, effective interventions.

As Abby enjoys her birthday treats and the affection of her coworkers, the West Des Moines community is reminded of the power of compassion in public safety – a principle that resonates deeply with families, faith‑based groups, and citizens who value a caring, resilient neighborhood.
