On Thursday, Bartow City Hall became a place of celebration as the community honored Ace, the retired K9 of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Ace earned his retirement after a harrowing August incident in which he shielded three deputies from gunfire, sustaining a gunshot wound that required amputation of his left front leg.

Deputy Natalie Oestreich, Ace’s handler, spoke about her partner’s resilience. “He’s loving all the treats and toys and every piece of steak that he’s got,” she said, noting that Ace has adapted well to his new routine at home. Despite his physical change, Oestreich emphasized that Ace remains eager to serve. “When I put on my uniform, he’s ready to jump in the car and find somebody else. He’s ready to go back to work. You can’t keep him down,” she added.

Bartow City Commissioner Trish Pfeiffer praised Ace’s spirit, calling his three‑legged walk a “speaking tour” that inspires others. “He lights up the world, and that’s exactly what he’s doing,” Pfeiffer said. That’s what’s great about living here in Polk County—the support we have from them shows in the outpouring to Ace and Natalie,” Wright said.

Deputy Oestreich will soon return to duty with a new K9 partner, a gift to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office from a K9 vendor.
