Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., expressed regret over his past endorsement of Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. This comes after a recent sexual assault allegation against Platner, which led to the end of his campaign.
Platner’s Campaign Ends Amid Allegations
Platner announced the end of his campaign following a report accusing him of sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend in 2021. Several major Democratic figures, including Khanna, had initially stood by Platner despite previous controversies and allegations of sexual misconduct.
Khanna had personally campaigned with Platner in June. However, when a recent sexual assault allegation surfaced, Khanna was the first to withdraw his endorsement. He stated that his line in the sand was always sexual assault or sexual violence.
Khanna acknowledged that he got his initial endorsement call wrong and emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of domestic violence earlier. He also highlighted Platner’s politics, including his opposition to foreign wars and support for Medicare for All.
