Chase Burns, the 23-year-old pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, will miss this year’s All-Star Game after suffering a groin injury. Burns reported the injury to Reds manager Terry Francona on Friday and decided it would be best not to participate in the All-Star Game, which is set for July 14 in Philadelphia.
Injury Details
The injury occurred on Wednesday when Burns hurt his groin while covering home plate on a wild pitch. Despite the injury, Burns pitched an additional three innings in the game, leading the Reds to an 11-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Burns stated that adrenaline got him through the game, but the next day, his groin was tight. He added that it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but he knew that he would risk further provoking the injury if he pitched again this week.
This season, Burns has quickly turned into a top contender for the title of the Reds’ ace, leading Cincinnati to an astonishing 11-1 record while on the mound since March. During that time, he has also put up an ERA of 2.54 over 18 starts this year.
With Burns’ absence, Reds rookie Sal Stewart will now mark Cincinnati’s lone representation at the league’s annual showcase of its top talent this year.
