Phoenix Pride Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Amid Financial Struggles

Phoenix Pride, a nonprofit organization that has been a cornerstone of the LGBTQ+ community in Arizona for 40 years, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The organization, which hosts the state’s largest LGBTQ+ events, Pride Fest and Rainbow Fest, is facing significant financial challenges.

The filing was announced on Friday, with Phoenix Pride citing rising operational costs and a decline in sponsorship and fundraising support as the primary reasons for their financial difficulties. The organization attributes these challenges to the current political climate, which has affected their ability to secure necessary funding.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows Phoenix Pride to continue its operations while restructuring its finances under court supervision. This legal process aims to help the organization manage its debts and continue serving the community.

Financial Strain and Legal Disputes

According to bankruptcy filings, Phoenix Pride owes nearly half a million dollars to various creditors. Among these creditors is Pride Group LLC, which claims it is owed nearly $420,000 for its services in helping operate events for Phoenix Pride. This claim is currently under dispute in federal court, and Phoenix Pride has declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Michael McFall, president and CEO of Pride Guide USA, expressed that the financial struggles of Phoenix Pride are not surprising. He noted a trend of large corporations withdrawing support from LGBTQ+ organizations, a trend he believes began during the Trump administration’s pushback on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. McFall also mentioned that other Pride organizations, such as Tucson Pride, have faced similar financial challenges, with Tucson Pride announcing its shutdown earlier this year.

Continuing Community Support

Despite the financial hurdles, Phoenix Pride has assured the community that it is not closing its doors. Events that have already been planned will proceed as scheduled, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to maintaining its presence and support for the LGBTQ+ community in Arizona.

Phoenix Pride also hosts various other events, including pageants and art shows, and provides resources for the LGBTQ+ community. The organization remains hopeful that through the restructuring process, it can overcome its financial difficulties and continue to serve as a vital resource and support system for its members.
