Operation Safe Driver Week, a US, Canada, and Mexico traffic enforcement and awareness campaign, is underway through Saturday. Led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the initiative aims to identify and penalize reckless, careless, and dangerous driving behaviors.
Focus on Reckless Driving
The 2026 focus of Operation Safe Driver Week includes speeding, following too close, improper lane changes, distracted driving, and ignoring traffic control devices. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Troopers will monitor both commercial trucks and passenger vehicles, paying close attention to how they interact with each other on the roadways.
The Alabama Trucking Association describes the enforcement and awareness campaign as a coordinated high-visibility effort to improve drivers’ behaviors through education, traffic-enforcement strategies, and driver interactions with law enforcement. ALEA Trooper Sgt. Reginal King emphasizes the importance of motorists using extra caution when sharing the road with larger vehicles, which have more blind spots and require greater stopping distances.
King advises, ‘If you can’t see the truck driver’s side mirrors, they can’t see you.’ The Alabama Trucking Association also reminds all drivers that safety is an all-day, every-day, year-round focus.
