A man fatally shot by an ICE agent in Maine on Monday was not the intended target of the arrest warrant federal agents were executing, according to Sen. Angus King’s office. The senator initially stated that the victim was the target of the warrant, but later corrected himself after speaking with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Investigation Underway
The ICE spokesperson stated that agents were conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal immigrant with a final order of removal. The illegal immigrant departed the residence in a vehicle, and ICE law enforcement attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The vehicle attempted to flee the scene, and an officer discharged his weapon, striking the driver, who later passed away from his injuries.
Sen. King pressed Secretary Mullin for a full, transparent, and open investigation into the fatal shooting, which will be led by the FBI. King said he intends to monitor the investigation closely to ensure it is fair and transparent.
The Biddeford Police Department and FBI responded to the scene, and the DHS OIG has been notified. The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine identified the man who was killed as a 26-year-old Colombian man and extended their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
