North Korea Nears Completion of New Yalu River Bridge to China, Analysts Say

South Korean satellite‑imagery firm SI Analytics reports that North Korea is close to completing the customs and immigration facilities on its side of the New Yalu River bridge. The work, slated to finish early September, includes road paving, perimeter landscaping and the removal of auxiliary support structures.

Bridge Project Resumes After Years of Delay

The 3‑km (2‑mile) bridge was originally built by China and finished in 2014, intended to connect the Chinese free‑trade zone in Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju. While the Chinese side was completed, North Korea left its portion unfinished for more than 12 years, halting construction amid strained relations and ongoing nuclear tests.

According to SI Analytics, the North Korean government has now executed the stalled work in just four months, using what the firm describes as a “speed battle” tactical approach. Satellite images show the final stages of construction, suggesting an imminent opening of the crossing.

Strategic Context and Recent Thaw

The renewed activity follows a broader diplomatic thaw. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang in June, after which both nations resumed passenger train services and direct flights between their capitals. In May, road markings for truck and passenger vehicle lanes appeared on the Chinese side of the bridge, indicating preparation for cross‑border traffic.

Analysts note that the bridge’s completion would symbolize a significant step in North Korea’s cautious move toward export‑oriented economic reforms, aligning with Beijing’s long‑term strategy to draw Pyongyang back into its economic sphere after pandemic‑induced isolation.

Regional Implications

On the same week, North Korea and Russia opened their first road bridge, a development highlighted by SI Analytics as evidence of expanding transport networks linking the Korean Peninsula to the broader continent. Together with the New Yalu River bridge, these projects could enhance North Korea’s connectivity on both its eastern and western fronts.

While no official comment was received from North Korean or Chinese authorities, the satellite evidence points to a concrete step toward re‑establishing a vital trade corridor that has been dormant for over a decade.
