UK air traffic control outage cancels 1,750 flights, ministers summoned

LONDON — A glitch in the United Kingdom’s air traffic control system caused a massive disruption on Tuesday, leading to the cancellation of over 1,750 flights across the country. The outage left passengers stranded on runways and in terminals, and airlines are still re‑booking travelers and repositioning aircraft as of Wednesday.

Technical issue and immediate impact

National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which runs the nation’s air traffic control network, traced the problem to “an issue in our flight processing system.” The agency says the fault has been corrected, but the ripple effects continue to be felt. Airlines report that many aircraft were left at the wrong airports, creating a logistical nightmare that will take hours to resolve.

Government response

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander demanded answers, summoning NATS chief Martin Rolfe for a meeting. In a post on X, Alexander wrote, “I am seeking assurances that lessons will be learned and systems that support aviation are up to the job.” The minister’s call underscores the importance of reliable air‑travel infrastructure for the British economy and for families who rely on timely flights for work, school, and worship.

Industry reaction

Budget carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air have publicly urged Rolfe to consider resigning, noting that this is the second major outage in three years. While the criticism reflects frustration among low‑cost airlines, NATS maintains that the system remains among the safest and most efficient worldwide.

Rolfe apologized for the inconvenience, telling the BBC, “Our job is also to make sure that people stay safe. We never do this lightly. We only ever do it when there is an issue that cannot be resolved quickly, and we have to take action to make sure those who are flying, who are in the air at that time, are safe. When we can restore these incredibly complex systems we do so as quickly as we can.”

What travelers can expect

Airlines have warned that delays will continue throughout Wednesday as they work to re‑schedule flights and move aircraft back to their proper locations. Passengers are advised to stay in contact with their carriers for the latest updates and to consider alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Despite the disruption, officials stress that the overall safety record of UK aviation remains strong. The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that robust technology and vigilant oversight play in keeping the nation’s skies safe and its economy moving.
