Louisville Metro Council has voted to rezone the former Givaudan plant site from industrial to commercial manufacturing. The decision comes over a year after a tragic explosion at the site killed two workers and injured three others.
Concerns and Support
Some council members expressed concerns about the rezoning, with Councilman Khalil Batshon warning that it could create a ‘developer loophole’ that would allow developers to bypass the usual application and public process. On the other hand, Councilman Andrew Owen supported the rezoning, stating that it would help the community move on from the tragedy and provide closure for the residents of Clifton.
The council passed the zoning change with a vote of 20-5. Givaudan, the former owner of the plant, did not request the change and has not commented on the proposal despite being contacted by the city.
