CT Youth Community Service Participation Drops

Connecticut, which once led the nation in youth community service engagement, has experienced a significant decline in participation over the past decade. According to a recent report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Connecticut Voices for Children, only 43% of Connecticut youths aged 14 to 17 participated in community service or volunteer work between 2022 and 2023, down from 70% eight years earlier.

Causes of the Decline

The coronavirus pandemic and a lack of connectivity between schools and local community organizations are believed to be contributing factors to the decline. Kate Scheuritzel, director of programs at Serve Connecticut, noted that even after schools reopened, many students lacked access to community service opportunities due to transportation issues. Additionally, Emily Knox, research and policy director at Connecticut Voices for Children, suggested that greater economic strain may have also played a role, as many young people may be entering the labor market and having less time for volunteer work.

Community service is essential for the development of young people, providing benefits such as positive mental health outcomes, professional development, and connection to local communities. As Knox stated, ‘When we think about young people’s exposure to the outside world, most oftentimes that is through school and these volunteer opportunities.’
