A Louisville man, Paul White, is working to transform an old school building into a space for kids, families, and community support. The 13,000-square-foot facility, called Flaget Hoop House, will offer tutoring, mental health resources, and other services for young people.
Community Hub
White envisions the space as a community hub, where basketball is just one part of the offerings. "Basketball is what gets you through the door," White said. "Once you get through the doors, you know, you want to have basketball and have tutoring, mental health, you know, therapy and just so many other things that we need to offer other than just basketball."
The building was once a Catholic high school in the 1970s. After it closed, White’s grandfather wanted to turn it into a youth center but was unable to finish the project. White is now carrying out his grandfather’s dream, with the help of community support and donations.
The project is still far from complete, with major work needed on the basketball court, roof, electrical, plumbing, and other basics. To help fund renovations, the court has opened for rentals at $35 an hour. White is doing much of the renovation work himself, but support from the community has started to grow.
