A procession through Cincinnati honored former sheriff Simon Leis, a Marine, prosecutor, sheriff, and judge, as it traveled from the West Side to downtown, passing landmarks where he built his legacy.
The route included stops at the Justice Center and the courthouse, places where Leis made national headlines and left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said, ‘If anybody deserves something like this, I think he would have liked it.’ The procession passed through the West End, where Leis’ character was shaped, and continued to places where he made his mark on Cincinnati’s history and left lifetime impressions on many.
Leis was known for his integrity and honesty, and he based his decisions on what he believed was right and wrong, even if he thought it might ruin his career. He was carried by an honor guard and his flag-draped casket was brought inside St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, where a strong rain began to fall.
Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey, who served under Leis for 26 years, reflected on their shared commitment to public safety, saying, ‘Yes, there could be differences, but when you are focused on a common goal, which is public safety, which is service to your community and Hamilton County, that joined you, and it certainly did bond us.’
