The family of 18-year-old Daniel Erving is seeking justice after a teenager was arrested in connection with his death at Lake Ray Hubbard. Erving’s mother, Tameka Erving, spoke publicly about her son’s death, describing him as an honor roll high school senior and a member of the swim team.
Arrest and Investigation
A 19-year-old, Lucas Roper, was arrested and charged in connection with Erving’s death. According to an arrest affidavit, Roper and a 16-year-old picked up Erving from his home to go fishing and swimming. The affidavit alleges that the three jumped from a bridge into the lake, and Erving drowned. Roper and the 16-year-old allegedly panicked and left Erving in the water, throwing his clothes into nearby trees and discarding his cellphone in a ditch.
Roper later admitted to deleting messages between himself and Erving, knowing that there would be an investigation and not wanting to get into trouble. The family’s attorneys are now conducting their own investigation, questioning the timeline of the arrest and the actions of the suspects.
Family’s Demand for Justice
The family is demanding additional charges, criticizing the current charge of tampering with evidence as insufficient. Dominique Alexander of the Next Generation Action Network said that the current charge is an outright disrespect to the family and the community. The family’s attorneys are seeking justice for Erving, with his mother stating, ‘I just want justice for my son.’
