Colorado Springs Fire Department Deploys New Tech to Boost Safety

Colorado Springs, Colo. – In a public demonstration on August 19, the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) unveiled three new technologies designed to enhance firefighter safety and emergency response. Mayor Yemi Mobolade emphasized that the tools are meant to extend, not replace, the work of firefighters.

Helmet‑Mounted Thermal Imaging and Augmented Reality

The first system, called the QWAKE C‑THRU, is a helmet‑mounted device that combines thermal imaging, augmented reality and navigation capabilities. Officials say the technology allows firefighters to see through dense smoke and locate people up to two and a half times faster than traditional methods. CSFD Chief Randy Royal noted that the department is the only one in Colorado using this equipment and one of only ten departments nationwide.

City‑Wide Wildfire and Smoke Sensors

The second technology consists of N5 Shield wildfire and smoke sensors installed on city property. Sensors are already active at CSFD Station 16, the Wheeler Building, CSFD Station 13, the Colorado Springs Airport, and Garden of the Gods. When a sensor detects potential fire conditions, an alert is sent to the Colorado Springs Police Department Real‑Time Crime Center and other first‑responder agencies. The alert can trigger a drone to fly to the site within roughly two minutes to assess the threat, with plans for additional sensors in the future.

Upgraded Drone Drop System

The third upgrade improves the department’s drone drop system, which delivers critical supplies—such as radios, food and other emergency items—to individuals in distress while rescue crews arrive. Chief Royal explained that the drones can provide exact fire coordinates, helping firefighters reach the scene more quickly. He recalled the 2019 “Waldo” fire, saying the new technology could have prevented that tragedy.

Mayor Mobolade reiterated that public safety remains a top priority for his administration. “Technology does not replace a firefighter,” he said. “It extends their reach, improves their awareness and gives them the advantage when seconds matter.”

The new tools are part of CSFD’s broader effort to modernize emergency response and protect the community. Officials stressed that while technology adds valuable capabilities, the dedication and skill of Colorado Springs firefighters remain essential.
