Knoxville teens fund breast‑cancer screenings, neighbors revamp park, and Maryville College celebrates Homecoming

Knoxville residents saw three uplifting community initiatives this week. Two seniors from Christian Academy of Knoxville turned personal family experiences with breast cancer into a charitable event, neighbors in the Timbercrest area began hands‑on upgrades to their local park, and Maryville College welcomed thousands of alumni and friends for its Homecoming celebration.

Students turn personal loss into early‑detection aid

Lauren Captain and Lilly Creel, both seniors at Christian Academy, have watched their mothers battle breast cancer. Their senior capstone project became a Sadie Hawkins dance held at Neyland Stadium on October 24. The dance benefitted Paint the Mountains Pink, a Covenant Health program that funds breast‑cancer education, screening and mammograms for women who lack insurance or the means to pay.

The event’s success prompted Covenant Health to expand the program beyond Sevier County into Knoxville, starting with Parkwest Medical Center. By increasing access to mammograms, the initiative aims to catch cancers early, when treatment is most effective.

Timbercrest Neighborhood Association improves local park

Members of the Timbercrest Neighborhood Association received a grant from the City of Knoxville’s Office of Neighborhood Empowerment to upgrade the park on Lance Drive. Volunteer workdays on October 18 and 24 allowed residents to install a new basketball‑court surface, add a retractable pickleball net, and improve parking for families attending park events.

The park already hosts community gatherings such as Easter egg hunts and Christmas tree lightings. Association leaders say the improvements demonstrate how strong neighborhoods grow when residents invest time and effort into shared spaces.

Maryville College Homecoming draws nearly 9,000 alumni

On Saturday, October 24, Maryville College celebrated Homecoming with a record‑breaking turnout of almost 9,000 alumni, students, faculty and supporters. Although the Scots football team fell to Berry College, 27‑7, the day’s festivities extended far beyond the scoreboard.

Graduates reminisced about influential professors and lifelong friendships, while college President Bryan Coker highlighted the enduring affection alumni hold for the institution. Director of Alumni Affairs Jennifer Phillips Triplett described Homecoming as a chance to reconnect with the community and the memories that make Maryville special.

Public input sought on future of Knoxville Municipal Golf Course

Residents have an opportunity on Tuesday, October 27, to share thoughts about the future of the Knoxville Municipal Golf Course. The Knoxville‑Knox County Sports Authority will hold a public hearing from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. as part of its review of a proposed redevelopment that could add golf facilities and multipurpose sports fields. Written comments are accepted through November 2.

These stories illustrate how ordinary citizens—students, volunteers, alumni and concerned neighbors—can shape the health, recreation and spirit of Knoxville. By supporting early‑detection health programs, improving shared public spaces, and honoring longstanding traditions, the community demonstrates the power of local action.
