Stavkirke Gets the Crowds. Wall Drug Gets the Signs

Wall Drug Store is exactly what it looks like: a sprawling, loud, self-promotional roadside complex that has spent nearly ninety years convincing people to stop in a town they’d otherwise pass through at 80 miles per hour. It works. About two million people a year pull off I-90 at Wall, South Dakota, which is roughly an hour east of Rapid City on the way to or from the Badlands.

The place started in 1931 as a small drugstore struggling to stay alive during the Depression. The owners, Ted and Dorothy Hustead, hit on the idea of offering free ice water to travelers baking across the prairie. They put up signs along the highway, and people showed up. The signs never stopped. By some estimates, there are now 350 billboards advertising Wall Drug across South Dakota and Wyoming, plus signs in London, Amsterdam, and at least one that reportedly turned up near the Khyber Pass. This marketing history is not trivia — it’s part of what you’re actually visiting.

Walk through the front doors and you get a maze of connected rooms that have expanded over the decades without much concern for coherent floor plans. There’s a Western art gallery with genuinely good pieces mixed in among the kitsch, a café that seats around 500 people, a chapel in the back where people occasionally stop and sit quietly for a few minutes, a pharmacy that still fills prescriptions, a jackalope mount that has been photographed approximately one million times, and an animatronic cowboy band that plays on a loop and will absolutely startle you the first time.

The café is the practical anchor. Breakfast runs until 11, and the donuts made on-site are better than they need to be — fresh, not too sweet, the kind you eat in the parking lot before you’ve found your table. Lunch and dinner lean on standard American diner fare: hot beef sandwiches, buffalo burgers, soup, pie. Prices are reasonable; a full meal runs $12–18 per person. The coffee, true to the original promise, is still five cents.

The shopping is dense. T-shirts, moccasins, Black Hills gold jewelry, plastic cowboys, postcards, turquoise, bison jerky, bumper stickers, shot glasses, books on western history — it goes on longer than you’d expect. Quality varies widely, but the bookshelf near the back has some actual reads worth picking up if you’re spending time in the region.

The honest reason to go is not that everything inside is remarkable. Most of it isn’t. You go because Wall Drug is a specific American thing — a place that willed itself into cultural significance through sheer, relentless self-belief — and because standing in the middle of it for an hour is genuinely interesting if you let yourself pay attention to what you’re looking at. Watch the families from the tour buses, the motorcyclists buying coffee at 7 a.m., the kids dragging parents toward the giant animatronic T. rex out back. It’s a functional portrait of the road trip as an institution.

Plan an hour minimum, more if you’re eating. It’s open daily, generally 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer with reduced hours off-season. Parking is free and enormous. Admission is free. Wall is 59 miles from Rapid City — a straight shot east on I-90.
