Carrollton residents will soon see a refreshed look for the iconic downtown silos, a project that blends the city’s agricultural heritage with a modern visual identity. According to Spectrum Local News, the City of Carrollton’s Capital Improvement Projects Division is preparing to repaint the silos and apply a new mural design as part of an ongoing downtown beautification effort.
The silos, constructed in 1950 for the Blanton Grain Company to ship grain via the adjacent railroad, have long served as a colorful statement on the Carrollton skyline. The tower was officially designated historic by the Carrollton City Council on Dec. 7, 2010, cementing its role as a reminder of the city’s economic growth.
Funding for the makeover was first proposed to the City Council in March 2024 and received final approval in August of the same year. The project is framed by the city’s vision of building a community that families and businesses want to call home, offering refreshed visuals and community‑focused branding.
A special arts committee has been tasked with reviewing mural proposals and selecting the final design. The committee’s work ensures that the artwork will reflect local values and aesthetics, aligning with the city’s emphasis on family‑friendly public spaces.
In addition to the mural, the city plans to remove equipment on the east side of the silos that was associated with a former rock‑climbing venture. That portion of the structure will be bid separately, allowing for a different painting schedule that accommodates the unique requirements of the east‑side surface.
City officials say the silos’ transformation will not only enhance the visual appeal of downtown but also reinforce Carrollton’s commitment to preserving its historic landmarks while promoting contemporary community pride.
What’s next: The arts committee is expected to choose a mural design later this year, after which the city will issue the bid for the east‑side work and schedule the repainting. Residents can look forward to the completed project in the coming months, marking a new chapter for a beloved Carrollton landmark.
