The city of Dallas announced it will furlough non-uniformed employees on July 10th, September 4th, and September 28th due to a financial shortfall. This decision affects all general fund non-uniform employees, with executives at or above the assistant director level required to take two additional furlough days of their choice before September 16.
Response from City Officials
Council member Adam Bazaldua expressed disappointment and frustration with the decision, stating that cutting workers’ pay should be the last resort. He also opposed the idea of a bond election in November, considering the city’s current financial state. Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tlbert said that furloughs are not the preferred solution but will help reduce expenses, protect jobs, and continue delivering services to residents.
Essential employees, including 911 workers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and specific city employees, will still be required to report to work on furlough days. The city has also implemented hiring freezes, suspended non-essential travel, and eliminated overtime for non-uniformed employees to address the financial shortfall.
