Why Every Atlanta Visit Should Begin at The Beltline’s Westside Trail

There is a stretch of Atlanta that most visitors never see, and that is precisely what makes the BeltLine’s Westside Trail one of the most rewarding walks in the entire city. While its Eastside sibling gets most of the headlines, the Westside Trail is where Atlanta’s raw, evolving spirit is most alive. Stretching roughly 2.4 miles from University Avenue in the south up toward Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in the northwest, this paved multi-use path cuts through some of the city’s most historically significant and rapidly transforming neighborhoods — Adair Park, Pittsburgh, Westview, and the West End.

I walked it on a bright Saturday morning, and within the first ten minutes I understood why locals guard this trail so fiercely. The path is wide, well-maintained, and lined with rotating murals that rival anything you’d find in a dedicated gallery. Atlanta’s street art scene is genuinely world-class, and the Westside Trail serves as one of its longest canvases. Around every bend there’s something new — bold geometric patterns, portrait tributes to neighborhood elders, whimsical scenes that make you stop and pull out your camera whether you planned to or not.

The trail is free and open daily from six in the morning until eleven at night, and the mix of people using it tells its own story about Atlanta. You’ll share the path with joggers pushing strollers, older couples on a leisurely stroll, cyclists navigating weekend traffic, and teenagers on electric scooters who somehow manage to make it look effortless. It’s a genuine cross-section of the city, unhurried and unpretentious.

One of the highlights along the route is Lee + White, a food and beverage collective anchored just off the trail near White Street SW in the West End. It’s home to several local producers including Monday Night Brewing’s original taproom, a bottle shop, a coffee roaster, and rotating food vendors. Ducking in for a mid-walk beer or a cortado while overlooking the trail feels like exactly the kind of reward a Saturday morning deserves.

The West End neighborhood itself is worth lingering in. It’s one of Atlanta’s oldest communities, and the architecture along the surrounding streets — Victorian-era homes with wide porches, corner churches with deep roots — provides a striking counterpoint to the trail’s contemporary art. The neighborhood has been home to luminaries including W.E.B. Du Bois, and that history layers the whole walk with a sense of place you simply cannot manufacture.

For first-time visitors who want to understand Atlanta beyond the tourist corridor, the Westside Trail is as honest and revelatory as this city gets. Pack comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and give yourself at least two hours to do it properly. You will not regret a single step.
