New Mexico officials have issued a smoke advisory due to the various wildfires burning in the state, including the Frijoles Fire in the Pecos Wilderness. Residents are advised to protect their health by staying indoors and setting up a clean room designed to keep smoke levels as low as possible.
Protecting Your Health
According to the New Mexico Department of Health and Environment, people can use the 5-3-1 method to estimate local air quality. This method suggests that under 5 miles visibility, higher risk groups such as young children, adults over 65, pregnant women, and people with heart and/or lung disease, and asthma or other respiratory illness should reduce outdoor time.
Under 3 miles visibility, these groups should stay inside. Under 1 mile visibility, the air quality is unhealthy, and everyone should stay inside unless an evacuation has been issued. Residents can improve indoor air quality using DIY options, such as making their own air cleaners, and can visit the U.S. EPA website for guidance.
