WGTE and WBGU-TV Partner to Preserve PBS Programming in Bowling Green

In a significant development for local television viewers, WGTE Public Media and WBGU-TV announced a partnership to keep PBS programming available on WBGU-TV, channel 27. This collaboration comes after WBGU-TV faced the prospect of ending its PBS affiliation due to federal funding cuts earlier this year.

Local Support and Transition

The partnership, set to begin on July 1, ensures that PBS programming will remain accessible to viewers in the Bowling Green area. WGTE highlighted that the support from its donors and members was crucial in making this partnership possible. Current members of WBGU will soon receive detailed communication from both stations regarding the transition.

WBGU-TV, a broadcasting unit of Bowling Green State University, will continue to focus on livestreaming university events and providing students with practical learning experiences in broadcast communications and video production. However, it remains unclear if locally produced shows like “The Journal” and “BGSU Brain Game,” which were previously slated for cancellation, will return.

Impact of Federal Funding Cuts

The partnership was necessitated by the federal government’s closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which eliminated federal funding for public broadcasters nationwide. This closure resulted in a $1.1 million funding loss for WBGU-TV, prompting the station to announce it could not sustain its PBS affiliation beyond June 30. WGTE has stepped in to assume the broadcasting responsibilities, ensuring that the local community continues to have access to PBS content.

WBGU-TV serves approximately 550,000 households across 19 counties, with around 40,000 households currently watching WBGU-PBS, according to Nielsen data. University officials have assured that most households in the viewing area will continue to have access to PBS programming through other affiliated stations.
