West Sixth Brewing, a Lexington‑based craft brewery, announced that its Covington Haus taproom will close permanently after operating for just under two years. The final day of service is set for Saturday, Aug. 29.
Background of the taproom
The taproom opened its doors in January 2025 at 100 West Sixth Street, occupying the historic former Covington Firehouse 1. The location was marketed as a neighborhood gathering spot where locals could enjoy West Sixth’s seasonal brews and community events.
Reason for closure
In an Instagram post, the company explained that the lease for the space is up for renewal. Management said it had to evaluate the financial commitment required to upgrade the facility for future years and concluded that continuing operations could not be justified under the current terms.
“Northern Kentucky has always been a special place for us, and we are so appreciative of that,” the post read. “Covington welcomed us with open arms. But unfortunately, with our lease coming up for renewal, we had to take a hard look at what it would take to make the investment the space needs for the years ahead, and ultimately we couldn’t justify continuing.”
Community response
Fans of the taproom expressed disappointment, noting the venue’s role as a friendly spot for families and friends to gather. West Sixth thanked patrons for their support, stating, “We’re sad to close this chapter, but mostly we’re grateful for the people who made it such a good one.”
Impact on local economy
The closure removes a small employer from the Covington business landscape and leaves a vacant commercial space in the downtown area. While the brewery has not announced plans for a new location in the region, it remains active in Lexington and continues to distribute its beers throughout Kentucky.
What’s next for the space?
Details about the future use of the former firehouse remain unclear. The building’s historic status may attract interest from other entrepreneurs or community groups seeking a venue that aligns with Covington’s revitalization efforts.
West Sixth Brewing encourages former patrons to stay connected through its social media channels for updates on future projects and product releases.
