Beginning July 1, the Work Zone Speed Camera Program in Washington state will increase fines for speeding in work zones. The first infraction will result in a fine of $125, while penalties for second and subsequent infractions remain $248.
Program Goals
The program aims to encourage drivers to slow down in work zones, not to generate revenue. Since enforcement began on April 16, 2025, cameras have been used over 900 times at about 50 job sites, resulting in 85,000 work zone speed camera infractions statewide. A Washington State Patrol trooper reviews images and data for every potential infraction and determines whether a violation occurred.
The cameras only record speeding vehicles when work crews are present at a job site. Drivers should always treat work zones as active, regardless of the time of day. The program has recently expanded into eastern Washington and plans to add more cameras, with 15 planned for use by 2027.
