Fort Smith is stepping up to meet one of Arkansas’s most pressing health care challenges. The AHCA School of Nursing has expanded into the River Valley with a new Fort Smith location, according to Arkansas Business — a welcome development for a state that has long grappled with a shortage of qualified nurses.
The new campus aims to train more nursing professionals right here in the region, giving local students a pathway into health care careers without having to leave the area. KHBS reported that the Fort Smith location is specifically designed to help address the nursing shortage across Arkansas, making it a meaningful investment in both the community’s workforce and its long-term health care capacity.
The good news for Fort Smith’s health care future doesn’t stop there. Mercy Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) have teamed up to offer a MASH program — Medical Applications of Science for Health — giving area teenagers a two-week, hands-on introduction to health care careers, according to the River Valley Democrat-Gazette. The partnership puts young people from the region on a potential path toward becoming the next generation of nurses, doctors, and health care professionals.
Together, these two initiatives signal a strong and growing commitment to building health care talent right here in Fort Smith and the surrounding River Valley — good news for residents, students, and the broader community alike.
