Concerns About Water Usage

Juhasz expressed concern about the potential data center, citing the region’s water usage. Mount Shasta is known for its water, which comes from glaciers on the mountain. The city’s water supply is a significant concern, especially given the current drought conditions in Northern California.

The Winnemem Wintu Tribe has already pushed back against the possibility of a data center, citing concerns about water usage, electrical power, toxic fumes, and noise pollution. A change.org petition is active, and community members are encouraged to voice their concerns at upcoming public meetings.

Annexation and Jurisdiction

The proposed site is currently in an unincorporated area of Siskiyou County, outside the city limits. However, Juhasz mentioned that the site could be annexed into the city as part of a deal with Siskiyou County, giving the city more control over the land and water supply.

Juhasz reiterated that he has no interest in a similar project being taken on in Mount Shasta, citing the city’s clean water and the potential risks associated with a data center. A meeting between the entity and city staff is likely to happen next week.
