Gen. Christopher Donahue, the last US soldier to leave Afghanistan in 2021, is unexpectedly leaving his post as commander of US Army Europe and Africa. Donahue, a West Point graduate and career special operations commander, will relinquish his command on July 2.
Leadership and Legacy
Donahue’s leadership during the evacuation from Afghanistan had drawn bipartisan praise. He was widely seen as a top officer who could have led the service or been chosen to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His departure comes as the Army is discussing downgrading US Army Europe and Africa from a four-star to a three-star command.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been criticizing European allies and has undertaken an effort to thin the ranks of the military’s top brass. Donahue’s deputy, Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, will perform his duties in the meantime.
