WakeMed and Atrium Health Merger Faces Community Concerns

WakeMed’s proposed partnership with Atrium Health has sparked significant discussion among state leaders and community members, as the final listening session concluded on Thursday night. Concerns have been raised about the potential for increased healthcare costs for patients and taxpayers across North Carolina if the multi-billion-dollar merger proceeds.

Community Concerns and Leadership Assurances

WakeMed President and CEO Donald Gintzig emphasized that the partnership would enable the hospital system to expand its facilities, add more beds, and continue providing high-quality care. He highlighted that both WakeMed and Atrium Health are nonprofit organizations committed to using their resources to enhance community health.

Despite these assurances, State Health Care Plan Executive Administrator Tom Friedman expressed concerns about the merger’s impact on healthcare affordability. He noted that Atrium Health is one of the most expensive health systems in the state, and any increase in WakeMed’s costs could affect taxpayers and state employees statewide. Friedman’s analysis suggests the merger could raise costs by $7 to $11 per member each month.

Future Steps and Community Impact

While some patients are worried about potential changes to their benefits, Friedman reassured them that WakeMed members would retain the same benefits next year, with possible cost reductions in certain areas. The merger still requires further approval from the county, and the next steps will unfold over several months.

WakeMed leaders maintain that the partnership is crucial for the hospital’s long-term growth and stability, aiming to strengthen healthcare services in the Triangle region for years to come.
