Since the start of President Trump’s second term, at least seven people have been fatally shot by US immigration agents. The victims include US citizens and illegal immigrants.
Incidents
The incidents have sparked controversy and calls for reform. In one case, a US Department of Homeland Security agent fatally shot Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old US citizen, in South Padre Island, Texas. Martinez was out celebrating his birthday when he was shot.
In another case, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, a 38-year-old Mexican cook, in Chicago. Villegas-Gonzalez had lived in the US without legal authorization since 2007.
Other incidents include the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old Mexican man by a US Customs and Border Protection agent in Rio Grande City, Texas, and the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
The incidents have raised concerns about the use of force by immigration agents and the need for greater transparency and accountability.
