A food-conditioned black bear in Swan Valley, Idaho, was euthanized earlier this week after it broke into an occupied residence and helped itself to some pumpkin pie.
According to a news release from Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG), a male black bear tore through a window screen on the night of July 12 and entered a house while the homeowners were sleeping. The bear then ransacked the kitchen and ate a pumpkin pie that was on the table. The residents were unharmed and only found out about the break-in when they awoke to the damage in the morning.
The following evening, the bear returned to the property and knocked over the household’s unsecured garbage can, gaining another food reward. Due to the bear’s entry into the home, IDFG set a trap to capture the bear. The capture effort was successful and the bear was humanely euthanized in compliance with the agency’s policy for bears that pose a risk to human safety.
“Our number one priority is always human safety, and we are extremely grateful that the individuals inside the home are OK,” IDFG Wildlife Manager Eric Freeman said in a statement. “In a situation where a bear has entered a residence, relocation is not an option.”
IDFG is reminding those who live in bear country to secure attractants like leftovers, garbage and pet food: “Bears that obtain human food can quickly become habituated and conditioned, increasing the likelihood of property damage, dangerous encounters and the need for management actions.”
