Trump Claims to ‘Love’ Inflation

President Donald Trump recently shared his thoughts on the current state of inflation, taking a surprisingly optimistic approach. When asked about the consumer price index, which jumped 4.2% over the last year, Trump stated, ‘I love the inflation.’ This comment came as a surprise, given that voters have ranked the economy as a top concern ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump’s Argument

Trump argued that higher prices are a result of the Iran war raising energy costs. He claimed that relief is already on its way due to a secret military operation that ferried 100 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, this operation has led to a decrease in oil prices, which had fallen below $90 a barrel after surpassing $110 at the start of April.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright was asked about Trump’s comments during a hearing. When asked if he ‘loved inflation,’ Wright responded, ‘No, I would prefer lower inflation.’ Wright also stated that Trump is ‘an entertaining, hyperbolic guy who’s done tremendous leadership.’ The White House pointed out that some expenses, such as the price of new vehicles, prescription drugs, and auto insurance, had dropped in May compared to the previous month.

Market Response

Despite Trump’s claims, the financial markets were cautious. U.S. crude oil futures climbed roughly 4% on Wednesday afternoon, trading at nearly $92 a barrel. Democrats were quick to respond to Trump’s comments, with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer stating, ‘Trump really said, ‘I love the inflation.’ On camera. For all of America to hear.’ House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries also responded, saying, ‘We finally found something that Donald Trump loves as much as he loves himself.’
