Louisville city leaders say they are seeing success in their push to combat crime as summer begins. Metro Council member Khalil Batshon stated that the effort includes more lighting in areas with higher crime and low visibility.
Safer Louisville Plan
The Metro Council Minority Caucus wants to improve the quality of life for residents. The caucus’ Safer Louisville plan includes 18 policy proposals, such as an anti-human trafficking ordinance and funding for a first-responder training facility.
Batshon mentioned that the lighting effort is one part of the plan, with $75,000 allocated for 14 to 16 solar-powered LED lights in non- or low-lit areas with high crime rates. The lights are meant to help discourage crime before it happens and are more energy efficient, making them harder to steal and sell.
Louisville Metro Police Deputy Chief Emily McKinley noted that the police department is short about 130 officers. The caucus also wants to strengthen laws around illegal ATV use to prevent vandalism at parks and golf courses.
Residents can follow progress on the proposals on the caucus members’ Metro Council web pages.
