A tornado touched down in Decatur County on Wednesday evening, causing damage in Garden Grove and bringing heavy rain and flooding to southeastern Iowa. Decatur County Emergency Management confirmed the tornado, which knocked down the wall of a building, snapped a tree in half, and scattered tree branches.
Damage and Flooding
On East Main Street in Garden Grove, the roof of a building appeared to have partially collapsed, leaving rubble and broken bricks behind. Wayne County, located east of Decatur County, also confirmed a tornado touchdown this afternoon. The Wayne County Emergency Management Agency reported the tornado was spotted just after 4 p.m. near Garden Grove and the border with Decatur County.
Heavy rain from the storms caused flooding in Lucas County. Michele Patton shared a video from Russell, saying the fire department had shut down a road due to rushing water across it. In central Iowa, the storms brought heavy rain and wind but no severe damage. Downtown Des Moines and Indianola were drenched around 7 p.m., and Lexi Smith sent in video of storm clouds rolling through Norwalk.
