Iowa Native Zach Johnson Returns Home for Principal Charity Classic

Zach Johnson, a native of Iowa City, is making his debut at the Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Johnson, who has won both the Masters and the British Open, is thrilled to be competing in his home state.

A Return to Roots

Johnson’s last appearance at Wakonda Club was in 1998, when he played a practice round with the Drake Bulldogs. Since then, he has become a golf superstar, and he is now competing on the Champions Tour as a 50-year-old rookie.

Johnson expressed his excitement about returning to Des Moines, saying, ‘It’s fantastic. Very welcoming. It’s nostalgic.’ He also praised the Wakonda Club, saying it still has the integrity he remembered from his childhood.

Johnson will tee off on Friday in Round 1 of the Principal Charity Classic. He is looking forward to competing in front of his home crowd and is hoping to make a strong showing in the tournament.

A Story of Perseverance

Former champion Scott McCarron is also competing in the tournament, despite being diagnosed with stage two B-cell lymphoma in March. McCarron has been undergoing chemotherapy and is determined to make the most of his time on the course.

McCarron said, ‘I hope to have my A game this weekend. I’ve been fighting cancer, so I’ve been battling that for the last three months.’ He also expressed his love for the tournament, saying, ‘I just love coming here to Des Moines. It’s a great, great tournament.’
